The Woodstock Spirit

Written by Lisa While

In October 2025, I was thrilled to receive a GAIL Fellowship to explore the pastoral systems at Woodstock School, India. My visit offered a firsthand look at how Woodstock nurtures student well-being, creating a safe environment where personal and academic growth flourish.

Being immersed in the community meant engaging in the heartbeat of daily life. From dorm visits and advisory sessions to homerooms and assemblies, I experienced the genuine kindness and openness of the “Woodstock spirit.” The generosity of the staff and the warmth of these smaller settings made me feel like a part of the community.

The school’s stunning mountain terrain provided an unforgettable backdrop. Walking with alumni and staff offered deep insights into the school’s rich history, while joining senior students on a service mission to a nearby village provided a meaningful perspective on local impact. Beyond the gates, the vibrant local bazaar and the breathtaking views of the Himalayas added to the magic of the experience.

Ultimately, my time at Woodstock was defined by connection—to people, nature, and community. I am deeply grateful to the Gail Fellowship and the Woodstock staff for this life-changing opportunity.
